Gualdo Tadino

Town Hall

p16onmsiru1q7u45h17quqk4ldg3

This building was re-built in 1751 according to a project by Clemente Orlandi (Rome 1696-1775) on a pre-existing structure dating back to the thirteenth century. It is home of the executive council of Gualdo Tadino. Badly damaged by an earthquake in 1997, it underwent other restoration works. Given that the original structure and foundations proved to be quite resistant, the first intent was to bring it back to its original shape; the architects proudly point out that now the restored building looks exactly like it was 250 years ago, with the benefit of new technology such as the additions fiber-reinforced plasters, in compliance with the original architecture.
The main interventions aimed at recovering the old eighteenth century-building and, on the other side, at eliminating all the unnecessary elements, starting from the concrete ceilings, to make space to the original wooden roofing that ensure also a greater lightness of the structure. All the vaults have been recovered, including one under the council chamber, which was about to collapse. All the superstructures of the inner courtyard have been eliminated, thus brining it back to its primitive state.
The inner courtyard was the subject of an innovative work of restoration with the construction of a metal dome with special glass, which made it possible to recover this space and turn the whole into an inner square, overlooked by the windows of the registration office; it can be used as a space for exhibitions. Moreover, all the differences of height between the floors have been eliminated, as they constituted actual barriers, and a lift was added inside the building to complete the works started prior to the earthquake.
