Its name, which derives from the nearby river Flebeo, later called Flea, already appears in the 12th century documents. In the succession of the varius domination imposed on the town, the fortress was first occupied by Frederick Barbarossa's troops, then by those of the pope and, in 1208, by those of Gelph Perugia. Damaged by many conflicts, it was restored by Frederick II around 1242. In 1350, when Gualdo was subjugated by Perugia again, the construction began the town's own emblem. In the 16th century, it became the residence of the papal legates and, as a consequence of it, part of the interiors were decorated with frescoes. After the Unification of Italy, it was turned into a prison and used still the 1985. After it, it was restored and used as a museum. A note of interest are the fourteenth-century arches outside and sometimes hipped with terracotta lunette, the walkway now traveled by visitors, the portal of the chapel dedicated to John the Baptist and the unique staircase that leads to the loggia on the upper floors. The garden that embraces the Rocca Flea is a natural setting and integral part of the fortress. The park is not only a place of leisure, but in itself it takes a value nature of the foreground. An observant visitor, can see the different species of plants that decorate the spaces behind the walls of the fort. The varieties planted, from annual to seasonal ones, follow a specific project for available and species, typical of our territories. From Ulivo "cultivars rigalese" to the broom of our mountains, from small and sweet-smelling patches of savory (the herb medicinal properties recognized since ancient times), to plants that are found in the paintings in the Pinacoteca: the core of this Tree Jesse, the pomegranate, which is visible in the hands of the child in the table created by Matthew Gualdo in 1462.
The route is a riot of flavors that are followed, an encounter with nature in a context ennobled by the ancient walls of the fortress.
